“Be a leader.” “Step into your leadership role.” These are two of the phrases I heard quite often when I joined the industry. Problem was, I didn’t know what being a leader in the industry meant. I came in as a leader but from a different industry. The educational industry was far different from the marketing industry. I was clueless.
Besides, I joined this industry to build my business and to make money not to lead others. Yet, I kept hearing it, “You’re a leader.”
After joining a marketing system and attending webinars and other training, I came to understand what this “leader” thing was all about. It’s providing value to others.
Just like me, there are others, many others out there who are new and don’t have an understanding about how to build their businesses. They have to learn from someone and that someone could possibly be me. And that’s what being a leader in the marketplace is all about!
3 Ways On Being A Leader In The Marketplace
So, at this point, you may be wondering “what does being a leader” in the industry really mean. Here are 3 ways you can be a leader in the marketplace.
First, brand yourself. So many marketers make the mistake of “hiding” behind their company. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying they are undercover but they put their company first and foremost. They post the products and services of the company. The company logo is represented on their social media sites. No one knows anything about them, who they are and what they have to offer. It’s the company…all the way!
Now again, don’t get me wrong, their companies are fabulous with excellent products and services. Just remember, the company has spent thousands of dollars branding itself already. It doesn’t need you to further brand them. Instead, you should brand “YOU”.
Let’s say, for example, you’re in the health and wellness industry. You’re with a company that sells vitamins, supplements, probiotics and proteins bars. Branding yourself means NOT displaying these products all over your social media pages.
It also means NOT flashing the company logo everywhere. If you have a business email address, it should NOT include the company name as part of it. You should have a separate identity that does NOT include your company.
Think about who you are, what you do and what you have to offer. Then brand yourself based on that. If you have a passion for health and wellness, you could be a coach, for example.
In this role, you can help others achieve their health and wellness goals. You see, people will look to you for your expertise in the industry. Your company has nothing to do with it until later on down the line when people will have gotten to know, like and trust you and feel comfortable buying your products. This is one example of being a leader. Let’s move on!
Next, you want to provide value. As a leader, you want people to know that you are an expert in your industry. This can be accomplished by providing value that your audience can relate to. Whether it’s answers to their questions, solutions to their problems or pain killers for what ails them, you have it all. People will look up to you because of the value you provide and they will continue to look to you for more.
So, in the case of the coach in the health and wellness industry, there is an abundance of information you can provide. You can provide tips for staying healthy, recipes for healthy snacks, exercises to keep fit and so on.
All of these topics are related to health and wellness and your company need not even be mentioned. However, as I stated above, eventually you can introduce your audience to your products because they will be relevant to what your audience needs. This is another example of being a leader and probably the most important!
A Piece Of Real Estate
Finally, you need a piece of real estate. This is YOUR property whether it’s your blog, your website or your business page or any other social media profile that you may have. It’s where people can come to learn more about you, what you do and what you have to offer. This is another example of being a leader.
On your real estate, people can engage in your content, take advantage of your knowledge and expertise, buy your products or services, sign up for coaching or courses and much more. Every leader has this piece of real estate and so should you!
All of the above three examples show leadership. This is why people will view you as a good leader and how you will gain followers, fans, customers and repeat customers. So, if you want to be among the great leaders in the industry, start by being a leader in your niche, continue to learn and share what you know.
