So, you’ve heard it over and over again.  You have to build relationships in order to succeed. That’s because network marketing is a relationships business. You’ve heard that it’s important to extend your network by reaching out and meeting new people. But if you’re new to the industry, you’re probably wondering, How do I do that? Look around! So many people have set themselves up for failure because they have not grasped the concept of establishing relationships. True, it takes time to do that but in the long run, it’s the key ingredient of a successful business! It doesn’t matter what your business is. You have to build relationships and continue to nurture them. These are your potential customers and if you do it right, they’ll become your loyal customers. Yes, you have to build relationships to be successful in any business!

Meeting People Online

If you’re an “online” type of person, it’s really easy to meet people. There are 1.71 billion monthly users on Facebook, 316 million monthly users on Twitter, 500 million monthly users on Instagram…need I go on?  There is a plethora of people on social media every month, every week, every day, every minute and every second. What does this mean for you? It means you can set your sights on meeting people in a variety of social media platforms because as you can see…there is no shortage of people to meet. The great thing about online networking is that you can meet people from all over the world.

Meeting People Offline

Now if you’re an “offline” kind of person, there are may opportunities to meet people as well. Try networking events, ribbon cutting ceremonies, vending events, public events, school events…anyplace where there are people. Although there are many venues to meet people offline, keep in mind that you are limited in the scope of how many people you can meet. In any case, your goal in both online and offline networking is to meet people and make connections. 

how to be successful in businessWhen looking for people to meet, also called prospecting, you want to go where people who may want your product or services “hang out”. Of course this means you have to decide on your target audience and then go find them. So, for example, if your target audience are women over the age of 50 who want to look youthful, you’ll look for that audience. You can look in social media groups, forums, trade shows, exhibitions, conferences and online events that are related to that audience.

As you can tell, to build relationships is easy to do on or offline and is a critical piece in building your network marketing business.

Big Mistake Network Marketers Make – Not To Build Relationships

People join people not companies. Are you one of those network marketers who promotes your company only? This is a mistake that so many network marketers make. See for yourself. Go online and you’ll find people using their company logo as their profile picture. Mistake! Or you’ll see a listing of their products, post after post. That’s a no-no! When content is shared, it’s about how wonderful their opportunity is! Honestly, no one even cares about that! How about this one…I want 5 people to join my company for a great opportunity. You’ll make lots of money!  Sorry, I don’t know you and I’m not going to put my future and the future of my family in your hands!! It is imperative that network marketers brand themselves. Companies spend lots of money for the company brand. You have to focus on YOU!

The Reality?

The reality is if you want people to buy from you and join you, you had better get to know them first and let them see you as an individual with hopes and dreams just like them. You also have to let them know that you care about what they care about and that you can help them. Build relationships and nurture them. When people know you and like you they will trust you. Now you have something to work with!

  1. Love your post Theresa! Funny that some people get a little nervous about meeting people online. They are still people…you don’t talk to them any different than anyone else. Whether it’s online or offline, it’s always about building those relationships.
