If you’re in the network marketing industry, you should know that in order for you to be successful, you have to step into a leadership role. And in order to be successful, you need to display certain leadership qualities. It’s the only way people will look up to you, learn from you and trust in your credibility. It’s a known fact that people follow leaders and people follow leaders because they want to be successful. They know that leaders have answers and will guide them to the success they seek.
Recently, I was on a MLSP Wake Up call and Mark Harbert, top earner and leader inside the community shared these tips for being the kind of leader people will want to follow.
5 Traits of a Successful Leader
So if you’re asking, “What does it take to be a good leader?” You’ll need to know the traits of a successful leader. Here are ten that will make you the kind of leader people will follow:
Be humble. Humility is defined as a low or modest view of one’s own importance. We know that a leader has it going on. A leader has experienced some success. A leader is the apple of everyone’s eye. But the minute the leader shows a lack of humility, he/she can quickly fall from grace. Some leaders change when they become successful top earners. They think more of themselves than others. Being humble is an important quality because it tells others that, even though you’ve made it, you haven’t forgotten the struggle.
Have a compelling vision. With a vision that people can relate to or are striving toward themselves, it will be easier to gain followers. If your mission is to help create millionaires or to teach people strategies to become financially independent, and you are shouting this loud and clear, those who want to achieve this will hear and follow.
Be responsible for your actions. As a leader, you are being looked to and looked up to. It is important, then, to do and behave in a manner of a leader. If you do something that is contrary to what a leader does, you have to take responsibility for it. Never play the blame game or make excuses as to why you did or said something that should not have been said or done in the first place. Take ownership of it and make amends.
Be consistent. People are looking for consistency. When you are consistent, it shows that you are organized, dependable and giving of yourself. When people come looking for you, they will always find you.
Be affirming. Let people know that you recognize what they’re doing. Go on their pages and compliment them. Leave comments that tell them they are “doing it” or “you’re awesome”, for example. People love it when leaders compliment them. I know this from experience. The first time Brian Fanale, CEO of My Lead System Pro, liked one of my Instagram posts was the day I was on top of the world. He’s liked and commented on several more since then. In another example, it was totally unexpected to see Todd Falcone’s comment on an Instagram post. I was thrilled at that as well, even more so when he responded to my comment about his comment.
5 More Traits Of A Successful Leader
Show people you care. You’ve probably heard that expression that people don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care. You show this by talking and listening to their concerns and problems. As a problem solver, it is your duty to show empathy and assist in helping them solve their problems.
Communicate well. As a leader, you have to be able to communicate well. You do this by reading and learning every day. The more you learn, the more versed you are at speaking to your prospects about their issues and providing solutions.
Show respect. Understand that everyone has a point of view and that point of view may be different from yours. It’s okay to disagree but it’s not okay to be disrespectful because of it. Your role of leader or your position of earning doesn’t mean you change or that somehow because of it, you’re better than those who may be following behind you.
Be trustworthy. One of the hallmarks of this industry is that people will only buy from people they know, like and trust. So it is important to gain people’s trust. You do this by how you’re “being” in the public eye. Always present yourself as a professional in the way you look, speak and by your actions. Always show yourself as a person of integrity and fairness. Be genuine and encouraging. Be the “go to” person for information, resources and ideas. People will naturally follow you because they know you or feel like they do, like and trust you.
Follow up. When you commit to do something, make sure you do it. Whether it’s a blog post series, a video tutorial, phone calls or appointments at specific times, if you say you’re going to do it, do it. People want to know that you are a person of your word. If you show that you’re not, chances are they won’t be interested in you as a leader and will look to someone else.
